Atanu Das, Pravin Jadhav, and Tarundeep Rai of India won an easy 6-2 victory against Kazakhstan in the men’s archery team event Round of 16 on Monday at the Tokyo Olympics. At 10:15 IST, they will meet the highly favored Koreans in the quarter-final.
After a 6-2 triumph against Kazakhstan on Sunday, India’s men’s archery team advanced to the quarter-finals of the Tokyo Olympics. Later in the day, they will meet the powerful Koreans, who have dominated thus far at Yumenoshima Final Field.
After poor performances in the Ranking Round, Atanu Das, Pravin Jadhav, and Tarundeep Rai advanced to the Round of 16 matches. In reality, Pravin was teamed with Deepika Kumar in the Mixed Team event, when India was knocked out in the quarter-finals.
However, the experienced Indian men’s team put behind the setbacks and came up with a dominant performance against Kazakhstan’s Abdullin Itfat, Denis Gankin, and Sanzhar Mussayev.
India did not have the best of starts as they shot 9, 9, 8 in the first round of the first set but they got back on track with Atanu and Pravin hitting 10s as they took the first set 56-55. There was a 7 from Tarundeep in the 2nd set but India managed to take the 2nd set 52-51, thanks to some inconsistency from the Kazakhstan archers.
However, the third set was a step up as the Kazakhstan team got 3 10s to win 57-56.
At a time when India appeared to be under duress, Atanu led the team from the front as they won the last set 55-54 and the match 6-2.
India will meet the highly favored Korean team in the quarter-finals at 10:15 a.m. IST on Monday, owing to their lackluster performance in the Ranking Round. Kim Je Deok, Kim Woojin, and Oh Jinhyek, who will represent Korea, are tough nuts to crack.
The Korean women’s team earned their 9th consecutive gold medal at the Games on Sunday.
